Thalamocortical loops, multi-compartment neurons and more...

New SpikeFun versions comes with multi-compartmental neuron models, thalamocortical system simulations including cortex (6-layers) and thalamus modeling, simulation of fMRI BOLD (Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependence) and several other cool features! Yes... now we can do spherical neural topologies!

New SpikeFun update (v0.40) adds initial support for the spherical neural network topology (in a very early and buggy form - i.e. neuron picking is totally flawed!). Spherical topology is very useful, as it easily allows simulating of the "reentry" effect, which is also observed in the vertebrate central nervous system (so-called "thalamocortical loops"). Original idea for spherical topology for simulating reentry effects came from the Izhikevich et. al..

Neural Network View à la "Blue Brain"

I've extended SpikeFun v0.36 to support rendering of the entire neural network, including synapses, in the similar style to "Blue Brain Project" visualizations. Read more...

1.5 million cortical neurons... and 46.5 million synapses - simulated...

Yesterday, SpikeFun was enhanced with video capturing feature (currently to set of JPEGs only)... and I've decided to run a slightly larger than usual simulation to demonstrate the video capture in full effect... click on the title to see it!
